Put Trauma Behind You follows A Sensible Vision and represents a significant development from understanding trauma towards practical trauma relief and recovery. Co-authored with my husband and ministry partner, Rev Wynand Louw, the book was shaped by our experience of working with clients and listening carefully to the realities of their trauma journeys. Its purpose is to make trauma support accessible, practical and relevant to South African readers.
The book deliberately uses an easy-to-read, non-diagnostic approach. Instead of relying on biomedical or diagnostic terminology, it provides a practical description of common post-traumatic reactions, helping readers recognise that their responses can be understandable reactions to abnormal and overwhelming circumstances. This approach offers language and reassurance without defining people by a diagnosis or reducing their identity to what has happened to them.
Written for people whose world has been shaken by trauma, the book provides practical pathways to help readers:
- Break free — begin to move beyond overwhelming emotions, confusion and doubt.
- Find clarity — understand feelings, reactions and struggles with faith.
- Take action — use accessible checklists, worksheets and recovery plans to support practical movement forward.
- Rebuild wholistically — recognise that trauma can affect emotional, relational, spiritual and financial dimensions of life.
- Move forward — draw on timeless Biblical hope and the wisdom developed through many years of ministry and counselling.
Put Trauma Behind You therefore represents an important point in the development of my knowledge map: moving from understanding trauma to providing an accessible pathway for trauma relief and purposeful recovery. It demonstrates how research and counselling experience were translated into practical resources that could be used directly by people navigating the aftermath of trauma.
The book is also available in Afrikaans, extending its accessibility within the South African context and recognising the importance of engaging people in language that feels familiar and meaningful.
