Helping victims and secondary victims to put trauma behind them opened my questions that needed answers. Although the research meant walking a long road to healing with hurting people, their stories are treated with sacred care and confidentiality.

“God Makes a Difference” – A Metaphor of Hope for Survivors of Sexual Trauma

In this study, Dr Barbara Louw sought to create an inclusive, culturally sensitive healing framework that would help survivors transition from victimhood to empowered individuals, embracing life beyond their trauma. Drawing upon insights from Practical Theology, Theological Ethics, Victimology, Traumatology, and Narrative Therapy, the research developed a pastoral counselling model anchored in the concept of “God Makes a Difference” as a metaphor of hope.

 Dr Barbara Louw's postdoctoral research on posttraumatic bitterness and embitterment was focused on her work in the South African context. By addressing embitterment as a transformable emotional state, this research proves that individuals can shift from anger and resentment to peace and wholeness. The Posttraumatic Wellness Coaching Model serves as a pioneering approach to trauma recovery, guiding individuals and organisations towards emotional renewal and empowerment.
